M&P Legal's employment unit head John Aycock was the guest speaker at a seminar held on 7 May 2014 in Castletown, Isle of Man organised by Connect2HR, a local agency. John's update to delegates involved an analysis of the contract of employment under Manx law, together with an update on topical labour law issues. These included the rise of social media and how that impacts with day to day employment issues such as enforcing confidentiality restrictions.
John outlined the mandatory terms that need to be confirmed in writing under the Employment Act 2006 of Tynwald and then went through some optional extra terms that would be desirable for contracts of employment. John also went through some recent case law in the Isle of Man involving restrictive covenants and confidentiality obligations and he summarised how a large recent case in the Isle of Man Employment Tribunal had dealt with an enforced change to contractual terms.
